blinded by science

Monday, July 30th, 2007

From the article BLINDED BY SCIENCE by Bruno Maddox:

Let everything but the truth be “Fantasy,” I say, and let the truth—the searing, unmanageable, discombobulating truth of the lives we have invented for ourselves in a world it took artists to imagine—be Science Fiction.

clique!
This is interesting. Discounting the warzones, it puts things into perspective a bit. There are countries with much higher rates of death by firearms than the U.S.; but critics always talk about the rate of deaths “among western nations.” The implication that we are somehow expected to be more “civilized” than Mexico, Russia and Brazil– all of which outstripped us in this regard in 2000– is kind of disgusting.

Clearly there is something wrong in this country. But I can’t decide whether it’s just ugly or stupid, this apparent attitude of, “Hey, you’ve got a lot of rich white people over there! You shouldn’t be acting like this.”

Pope on Pop

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Most cartoonists hate Pop Art, since so many of those guys ripped-off cartoonists’ work, turned around and sold it back to Sotheby’s for a killing. [Tadanori] Yokoo taught me you could rip off Pop Art, turn right around and sell it everywhere else.

the power of nightmares

3-part BBC documentary from ‘04 about the concurrent rise of fundamentalism in the U.S. and Middle East. Has an obvious “left” bias, but manages not to fall into the “Bush = Bin Laden” trap.

a modern girl

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Because I am fascinating and wonderful, you care deeply about this 500-word short the lovely people at 365Tomorrows saw fit to run. It is called A Modern Girl, and I think I’ve been re-writing it for nearly ten years now.

Murphy took a bench and pulled a paperback from his coat pocket. He dialed down his shades to read better, and sipped his coffee. After a few pages, he became aware of a presence on the bench next to him.

“Oh, wow. Paper. You drive gas, too, huh?”
